Designing an Ecommerce Site

In a recent article I talked about Google AdSense placement based on eye-tracking research. However. research by The Poynter Institute. Eye tools and the Estlow Center for Journalism and New Media has a lot to say about more than where to put an AdSense block.

Designing an eCommerce site is more than making it pretty. You have certain desired actions you’re looking for from your visitors. You have specific things you want to be sure they see and hopefully act on. Now. there’s some research that can guide your design. Certainly you want your site to look professional. but you want it to do its job as effectively as possible too.

People are surprisingly alike in some of their basic visual behavior. It’s been argued that our evolution as hunter-gatherers has shaped much of our ingrained visual patterns. Whether you buy that particular argument or not there are still important commonalities.

Typical behavior on initially viewing a site is to do a fast scan of the entire visible screen with short focusing periods around the areas that attract attention. First pass tends to include headlines. the page logo. photo captions. subheads. links and menu items. And the big hot spot is the upper left corner of the screen. I haven’t seen any definitive research on whether these patterns also hold for users with native languages that read any way except left to right Replica Watches. but I’m assuming most of you are building sites for left-to-right readers.

The clear message is that your most important real estate is in that upper left area and that the lower right (particularly if it’s below the fold) is the least likely to receive much attention.

An interesting testing result that I read somewhere said that somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of site visitors don’t even see centered headlines. Sure they look nice and a lot of sites use them. but if they’re totally missed by even 3 percent of your visitors. you’re paying a major price to look good. Suggestion? Put those headlines up against your left margin.

This also applies to links. Put those links up against the left margin. not inside a paragraph. centered or off to the right. And if you want any clicks on a link. never put it in that nearly unseen lower right area. Might as well just leave it off your page.

How about indented paragraphs? Now there’s a great way to start an argument. Some argue that it attracts the eye. it’s different. few sites use it so you stand out. Others insist that you’re far better off staying left justified and frontloading each paragraph. There’s only one way to resolve it for yourself. yeah. run some tests and see what works with your visitors on your site.

The bottom line is that once you get beyond the basics of placement. frontloading. and left-justified links and headlines. you need to test if you want to fully maximize the effectiveness of your website design. I wish there were a simpler answer too. but in the end only testing will tell you what works best for your site

Lawsuit Claims Obama not a US Citizen

?The complaint is asking for declaratory (asking the court to declare Obama is not a US citizen. a “natural born” citizen and not eligible under the qualifications of the US Constitution to run for Office of President).

The law suite is asking for a temporary restraining order (TRO) prohibiting Obama from running for President until documents are provided proving he is eligible to run for POTUS.

The lawsuit was filed by a Phillip J. Berg (former chair of the PA democratic party)? in Philadelphia courthouse against Barack Obama and the DNC for Obama’s ineligibility to run for President of the United States based on his not being a “natural born” citizen:

The lawsuit contends that Obama has held multiple (Kenya and Indonesia citizenships) and that he was actually born in Kenya. not Hawaii as Obama has claimed.? The lawsuit has also been filed against the DNC.

The prominent Philadelphia attorney and Hillary Clinton supporter filed the suite in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee. The suite further seeks an injunction preventing the senator from continuing his candidacy and a court order enjoining the DNC from nominating him at the upcoming Demo convention. The law suite claims that Sen. Obama is constitutionally ineligible to run for and hold the office of President of the United States.

Phillip Berg. the filing attorney. is a former gubernatorial and senatorial candidate. former chair of the Democratic Party in Montgomery (PA) County. former member of the Democratic State Committee. and former Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania. According to Berg. he filed the suit–just days before the DNC are to hold its nominating convention in Denver–for the health of the Democratic Party.

“I filed this action at this time.” Berg stated. “to avoid the obvious problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these issues after Obama is nominated.”

Berg cited a number of unanswered questions regarding the Illinois senator’s background. and in the lawsuit documents maintained that Sen. Obama is not a naturalized U.S. citizen or that. if he ever was. he lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia. Berg also cites what he calls “dual loyalties” due to his citizenship and ties with Kenya and Indonesia.

Even if Sen. Obama can prove his U.S. citizenship. Berg stated. citing the senator’s use of a birth certificate from the state of Hawaii verified as a forgery by three independent document forensic experts Replica Watches. the issue of “multi-citizenship with responsibilities owed to and allegiance to other countries” remains on the table.

In the lawsuit. Berg states that Sen. Obama was born in Kenya. and not in Hawaii as the senator maintains. Before giving birth. according to the lawsuit. Should Sen. Obama truly have been born in Kenya. Berg writes. the laws on the books at the time of his birth hold that U.S. citizenship may only pass to a child born overseas to a U.S. citizen parent and non-citizen parent if the former was at least 19 years of age. Sen. Obama’s mother was only 18 at the time. Therefore. because U.S. citizenship could not legally be passed on to him. Obama could not be registered as a “natural born” citizen and would therefore be ineligible to seek the presidency pursuant to Article II. Section 1 of the United States Constitution.

Moreover. even if Sen. Obama could have somehow been deemed “natural born.” that citizenship was lost in or around 1967 when he and his mother took up residency in Indonesia. where Stanley Ann Dunham married Lolo Soetoro. an Indonesian citizen. Berg also states that he possesses copies of Sen. Obama’s registration to Fransiskus Assisi School in Jakarta. Indonesia which clearly show that he was registered under the name “Barry Soetoro” and his citizenship listed as Indonesian.

The Hawaiian birth certificate. Berg says. is a forgery. In the suit. the attorney states that the birth certificate on record is a forgery. has been identified as such by three independent document forensic experts Replica Watches. and actually belonged to Maya Kasandra Soetoro. The last fortnight got off to another shaky start when the British Bankers’ Association (BBA) revealed that the number of loans approved for house purchase had fallen to their lowest level since 2000. seemingly continuing a long-term trend that was unlikely to improve in the near future.

“Lower amounts of new mortgage lending and fewer loans approved for house purchase signal a weaker outlook for the mortgage market.” commented BBA director of statistics David Dooks.

However. at the time the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) pointed out that the problems were likely being exacerbated by some lenders removing first time buyer mortgages from the market. and while it’s true that this is something of a negative qualifier. there was good news further down the road for new buyers.

Two separate suggestions. made by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) and SmartNewHomes.com. both pointed to a rosier picture for those looking to get onto the first rung of the property ladder.

The new homes website suggested that developers wanting to post good year-end financial results are now beginning to offer better deals to first time buyers in an effort to attract them back to the market. The CML. meanwhile. said that Britons’ desire to own their own homes would continue to propel the market forwards.

“There are still strong aspirations to home ownership and any easing of prices would mean buyers who have been priced out of the market would have opportunities to enter the market and will take them.” CML spokesperson Bernard Clarke noted.

This in turn was supported by research from Fairinvestment.co.uk. which found that though mortgage enquiry figures had dropped over the past quarter. the number of first time buyers making such enquiries had risen from 77 per cent to 92 per cent of the market between Q1 and Q3.

Elsewhere the government announced more details of its ambitious plans to boost the UK’s housing stock. with housing minister Yvette Cooper revealing that councils would now have more of a say in how land is developed in their region.

In response. the National Housing Federation said that encouraging councils to release more land would still be a priority despite such measures. and if a study from More Than is anything to go by then someone should also look at helping furnish new buyers’ properties – 60 per cent of respondents to the insurer’s study said that funding decorating work and furniture was a problem for them in their first home.
